So you have decided to take the plunge and expand the family? Adopting a new animal is a big decision and is one of the most rewarding experiences you will have. Whether this is your first pet, or your 10th, our guide below details some must do’s and must have’s for your new loved one.

Buying for a puppy or kitten is much like buying for a new baby, the anticipation and excitement of setting up a new home for your pet is one of the first memories you will treasure.

Litter and litter trays – If your cat is going to be an indoor animal this is a must-have and can be purchased from most local supermarkets or pet stores. If your new bundle has arrived prior to you being able to dash up the road, shredded newspaper at the bottom of a tray works well.

Food, food and more food- The best food for your new puppy or kitten typically contains more protein, calcium, energy and magnesium essential for optimal growth. The most important thing to look for on any pet food you purchase is the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) approval which pet diets only receive once subjected to strict testing criteria. Our vet recommends Royal Canin or Hill’s puppy and kitten foods which are all AAFCO approved. If you would like your pets to be on grain free diets, we can supply Nutro foods.

Bedding – You can buy a comfortable new bed for your fluff ball either at your local pet store, or online if you don’t have a pet store local to you. An important consideration is that if your small puppy is going to grow to be a giant, buy an appropriately sized bed/mattress that he/she can grow in to. When they’re small, old towels can be placed on the inside to keep them snug. If your cats are anything like mine though, they will end up sleeping anywhere but their bed.

Toys – Kittens, and especially puppies are playful little things and like to chew all things soft and squishy – sometimes that includes your shoes so if you love your Jimmy Choo’s I recommend putting them away! Toy’s can be found almost everywhere you look. The pet stores, supermarkets and online shopping stores have everything you need.
